Background of the Study
Access to higher education is a key driver of social mobility, providing individuals with the skills and qualifications needed to secure better employment opportunities and improve their socio-economic status. In Nigeria, increasing access to tertiary education has become a national priority, as the government seeks to create pathways for upward social mobility. Recent initiatives between 2023 and 2025 have aimed to expand higher education opportunities through scholarships, infrastructural investments, and partnerships with private institutions (Ibrahim, 2023). These efforts are designed to break down traditional barriers to education, particularly for underrepresented groups in rural and economically disadvantaged regions.
Higher education plays a critical role in empowering individuals by equipping them with advanced knowledge, critical thinking skills, and professional networks that facilitate career advancement. Studies indicate that graduates from higher education institutions typically enjoy higher income levels, improved job security, and increased opportunities for entrepreneurship. However, access to quality higher education in Nigeria remains uneven, with disparities in funding, infrastructure, and academic support systems contributing to persistent social inequalities (Chukwu, 2024).
This study examines the extent to which access to higher education influences social mobility in Nigeria. It will analyze how enrollment in tertiary institutions impacts income levels, employment prospects, and overall socio-economic status. By integrating quantitative data from national education and labor market surveys with qualitative insights from graduates and policymakers, the research seeks to provide a nuanced understanding of the role higher education plays in facilitating social mobility. The findings are expected to inform policy decisions that promote equitable access to higher education and, consequently, more inclusive social advancement.
Statement of the Problem
Despite initiatives to broaden access to higher education, significant barriers continue to restrict social mobility in Nigeria. One of the primary issues is the persistent disparity between urban and rural areas, where students from rural regions face obstacles such as inadequate preparatory education, financial constraints, and limited access to quality institutions (Olatunde, 2024). These barriers hinder their ability to secure admission to tertiary institutions, thereby reducing their chances for upward mobility.
Furthermore, even among those who gain access to higher education, challenges such as poor academic support and misalignment between academic programs and labor market needs limit the economic benefits of their qualifications. As a result, many graduates struggle to transition effectively into the workforce, which undermines the potential of higher education to serve as a catalyst for social change (Adenuga, 2023).
This study seeks to identify the factors that inhibit the positive impact of higher education on social mobility. It will explore how disparities in access, quality of education, and post-graduate employment opportunities collectively contribute to a cycle of limited socio-economic advancement. Addressing these issues is crucial for developing policies that ensure higher education fulfills its role in promoting social equity and enhancing overall economic prosperity.
